With the Interim Review all done, we're ready to seal the skin. Sealing is the process of adding a clear varnish to the doll that will help protect all those many hours of painting from staining and scratching. At the same time, you can build up layers of varnish and texture it to look like tiny pore or wrinkles in baby's skin. This time I used Dewy Skin Medium and I'm very pleased with the results.

I've been reborning for a long time. Yet, I'm still filled with wonder and amazement the moment that a vinyl doll kit that I've been painting for weeks suddenly, magically and miraculously transforms into a lifelike doll baby.
Thanks to the beautiful weather and my north-facing back deck, I was able to carefully inspect Joshua's painting in direct and indirect natural light. He's so beautiful! I even carefully shaded a crease into his nose to look even more like the baby he represents. Next stop: sealing the paint and prepping this little guy for rooting.
inspect Helaina's painting in direct and indirect natural light. She looks amazing! Also, these German Lauscha Glass Eyes are really blowing my mind. The depth and color is so rich. And being full round, I can pose them to have her looking in literally any direction. Very exciting! This little princess is ready to be sealed and prepped for rooting!
I work my baby nails in several layers so they look as lifelike as possible. Helaina has nice big nails, the perfect platform to show off my work! LOL
The Interim Review at CustomDollBaby.com is a mini photo shoot of the painted doll kit to help me determine if any more tweaks are needed. I got to do a pre-interim review shoot. We still have a little more blushing to go, but he is looking very sweet!
I felt like I was still missing the golden undertones I was seeing in Joshua's baby picture, so I mixed up a little concoction of yellow and raw sienna to warm him up a bit in the pale spots. Now that's better! Joshua is being created from the limited edition Lillesol by Sabine Altenkirch

Shading: as easy as 1-2-3. A little bit of color in the right places goes a long way toward making a doll look like a baby. I love how my custom shading mixture really added depth to this ear.
With such beautiful weather, I went outside to record my long-anticipated heat-set painting curing tutorial. I couldn't resist the urge to get some photos of Joshua in natural light. Joshua is being created from the limited edition Lillesol by Sabine Altenkirch
On Saturday, we enjoyed a surprise visit from some out of town relatives. "You have to show them your dolls!" my husband insisted. But all my dolls are custom made and ship the moment I complete them, so I never have any on hand to show off. So I said, "Let me see who I can put together." LOL
Since Josh is the furthest along, he got to meet our cousins. Even in his incomplete state, he gained some fans. :) Joshua is being created from the limited edition Lillesol by Sabine Altenkirch Time to warm up baby's skin! I've been using my custom blushing color to paint the creases, warm the skin and shade key areas so her little skin folds look extra plump and lifelike!

Painting the creases on a reborn doll is SUPER time-consuming. It took me all day just to crease one kit. But I would never neglect to do it! Creasing creates the illusion of depth in the skin folds and wrinkles on the doll kit. Creasing and shading key areas of the doll brings out the detail of the sculpt and makes your blushing look amazing. I'm sure I've got several more hours of creasing to go, but he's looking great so far! Joshua is being created from the limited edition Lillesol by Sabine Altenkirch
Helaina got a little time to rest while other dolls occupied the painting station and the oven. She's so studious, even without eyes. LOL Hey little lady!

It's 12:30am, I'm exhausted from the day's work, but somehow I can't take my eyes off little Joshua. Sweet little guy. :)
Mottling creates the appearance of blood flowing under the skin. Here's Helaina getting her blue, red and green mottling layers. Helaina is based on Judith by Adrie Stoete. If Dracula were a doll artist, this step would make him hungry. LOL Veining is the process of painting lightly colored blue veins on the doll. Added with mottling, veining creates the subtle look of blood flowing under the skin - just like on a real baby! Joshua is being created from the limited edition Lillesol by Sabine Altenkirch
Mottling your reborn doll adds the appearance of blood flowing under the skin for a truly lifelike doll baby!
I suffer from migraines and on days when I'm not feeling well, I don't want to risk working on any of my custom dolls. So I decided to spend what little energy I had getting organized. Thanks to these fancy new "shoe boxes" I purchased and my massive new peg board, I have the peace of a place for everything and everything in it's place. Every baby has a box full of his/her supplies. Every part has a spot to dry. It is such a relief knowing I'm not going to lose anything. Sweet, sweet organization! |
