Creating your first African American reborn baby doll? Here's a quick tip for working with the premixed flesh tones. Bountiful Baby offers premixed complexion paints from Flesh 02 (dark brown) to Flesh 08 (peach Caucasian). I personally prefer to create a custom blend flesh tone from colors like Raw Sienna and Burnt Umber. But if you only have the premixes handy, here are a few quick tips: Flesh 03 is the most realistic complexion. It also continues to look good as you add more layers. You can achieve a large range of complexions using Flesh 03. This is not the case for Flesh 02. Flesh 02 starts to turn orange when trying to achieve darker complexions. But that's okay - just add a tiny bit of Ultamarine Blue to Flesh 02 to neutralize the orange in it. Remember, the color wheel is your friend. :) Last but not least, these paints are a lot like nail polish: the color it is on the doll looks nothing like the color it is in the jar. Get to know your paints with a test part. Try different layers and combinations of colors so you know the range of flesh tones you have to work with. That way, by the time you put it on the doll, you already know what you're going to get. Good luck and happy painting! Kim :) Update...Added 10/02/2015
I bought a bunch of Byron/ Emma/Claire arms from Bountiful Baby to further test the complexion colors. The Flesh 02 limb has a little shading for added effect. The rest are not modified with other paints.

On the test limb graph that you did above, how many layers would you recommend to stop at for a particular color? I do know when layering up the paint there's various color tones reached.

How did you mix your paints, to get your first layer to look like that?

I am new to reborning. I have an ethnic kit to use on my Juan doll. I would like to know, what will be my first step in reborning him?

Hi, I’m new at making reborn dolls. Therefore, can heat my vinyl doll in the oven like, you can with silicone dolls, please? I bought my doll separately from where I purchased my reborn beginners set from. Can you please help me?
