There's nothing worse than spending hours painting a reborn doll only to watch it melt in the oven or to see the paint wipe off later because it wasn't properly cured. Followed this handy oven guide to perfectly cure your heat-set reborning paints! I get a lot of questions about ovens, so I'm excited to finally post this NuWave oven demo. Disclaimer: I do not work for NuWave and NuWave did not pay me to produce this video. But if you know someone at NuWave, send them this video and I'll let you know where they can send my check. LOL In this video, I will demonstrate how to set up and program your NuWave oven for reborning. Of the available options, I prefer the NuWave because:
What about convection ovens or toaster ovens? While toaster ovens are also portable, they have several limitations for reborning:
What about conventional ovens? It is not recommended that you heat vinyl in any oven that is also used for cooking food because the chemicals evaporated off of hot vinyl stick to the inside of the oven. They re-evaporate the next time you heat the oven, which means you risk contaminating your food. Secondly, conventional ovens cannot be moved, so you also risk releasing vinyl fumes into your home. What about heat guns? Heat guns are great for curing small areas on your doll, like just the lips or just the veins. Make sure you don't hold it too close to the piece and keep it always in motion. Honestly, I just bake the whole kit, even when I'm only curing small areas because I like getting that curing time back to work on something else. If you have a NuWave oven like mine, keep this chart handy: Power Setting Temperature 10 (HI) 342°F(172°C) - this is the default setting! =-0 9 325°F (163°C) 8 300°F(149°C) 7 275°F(135°C) - tempting, but too hot 6 250°F(121°C) - my favorite curing setting :-D 5 225°F(107°C) 4 175°F(79°C) 3 150°F(66°C) 2 116°F(47°C) 1 106°F(41°C) - my favorite drying setting Genesis Heat Set Paints (GHSP) cure at any temperature between 250 and 285 Fahrenheit. My parts cure just fine at 250. At 275 in the NuWave oven, the parts become shiny. A normal bake cycle for me is 11 minutes at Power Setting 6. It takes the NuWave oven 3 minutes to reach the set temperature, so an 11 minute bake cycle gives me that warm up time plus a full 8 minutes of curing time. Varnishes and Mediums need more TIME, not more heat. I find that 15 minutes at 250 Fahrenheit is enough to cure most heat set mediums and varnishes. If you find that you need a better cure, add more time, not more heat. Where to get it: Make sure your oven comes with the 3" extender ring! How do you cure heat-set paints?

I don't have a Nuwave oven. I have an older oven. It's called Flavor Wave Oven. What do u suggest I bake at? It has level 1-4, not sure it it has the 60%?

I bought a Nuwave oven and I just opened it. The 3 inch extender ring is metal. I hope that is ok. I saw that yours was plastic. Would I just put more clothes in to cover? Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

I am new to reborning and I bought a convection toaster oven and a separate thermometer. I just tested it (empty, thankfully) before starting to paint and at a setting of 250 it heated to 375! Soooooo thankful I tested it - it's boxed up to be returned and I'm going to invest in the Nuwave - the added cost is worth not melting expensive doll kits!

I only have access to a gas oven, which I know uses real flames to cook. Is that guaranteed to melt?

How warm should the outside temperature be when baking a doll outside?

I've successfully cured paint in freezing (32-degree) weather. You have to calibrate your temperature settings to get the oven to heat against that much cold, as I did here: http://customdollbaby.com/in-progress/lets-talk-thermodynamics

Do you need the extender, or does the head touch the top without it?

Depends on the size of the doll. A head from a 26" kit will come horrifyingly close to the heating element. I always use the extender ring to keep my kit as far away from the heating element as possible.

How soon do I need to bake my doll for curing after painting it. Can I wait a day or two?

If you have to, it is ok to let it sit a few days. The issues that can arise are more environmental than paint related.

hi i looked up some videos on heating and im afraid to put my baby in the kitchen over and i dont have the money right now for a nuwave. my father-in-law got me a heat gun. ive seen some videos of people using one. do you think that would be okay for my first dolls until i can get a nuwave oven?

Sure. It's kinda inconvenient because you have to hold the piece the whole time you're curing. But as long as you don't get too close and keep the heat gun in motion, you'll be fine. Put a little paint on the flange too so you can easily test if the paint cured properly.

I also forgot to mention that using a heat gun increases your exposure to vinyl chloride - which is a toxic chemical put off by hot vinyl. Please buy a respirator if you plan to use a heat gun and make sure you work outside. You really don't want these fumes in any part of your living space and please don't breathe them.

Hi Kim! Congratulations to you and your husband on your baby boy!! OK I have the Nuwave plus pro oven do I set it on 6? You said they get a little hotter than the pro. Also should I cover the extender ring since it's metal? Six more days baby boy will have been born on my birthday!!! 😊

I am new to reborning and just purchased a NuWave oven. I did my test as you instructed with an oven thermometer. It is taking my oven 6 minutes to get to 250 degrees. Should I add an additional 6 minutes to my cook time, 14 minutes total time.

I forgot to mention, that it is inconvenient for me to use it outside. I have a basement with a laundry room, there is a door. There are also two bedrooms down there as well. Would closing the door while baking, help the fumes?

I was told to clean the oven before baking food. Isn't that good enough to removed anything left behind from the paints? I used the settings to clean my oven then wash it out with dish soap.

Hello! I'm new to reborning and your tutorials are super helpful. I have the nuwave oven pro plus however it did not come with an extender ring. The doll I have fits fine in there but when the curing is done the vinyl is soft. Is that normal? Thanks!

I was unaware of the fumes from a Nuwave. I've been doing my Reborn's in my studio, which was our underhouse garage that we converted into my craft studio. I have not been opening any windows and only some of the time am I in there when a Reborn is baking. Is this large room enough or do I need to start opening the door to the studio whenever I have the oven on? I'm very concerned too about the room upstairs above my studio. It's my son's bedroom. Is there danger to him by my using my Nuwave in the room below his bedroom?

I'm trying to cure my paints in the new wave. Heat set at 6 for 11 mins and the paint can be easily rubbed off with a cosmetic wedge after. So what am I doing I wrong? Do I need to do 11min each cycle as it takes a bit to do the next layer and idk if it's still warm enough. Today it really didn't matter. The blush rubbed off with little effort. Not sure what to do. I don't have a thermometer. It's a brand new nuwave i bought in january new.

I am new to reborning. Thank you so much for making all this information available. I used my Nu Wave oven today to cure my 3rd dolls first wash. The head distorted & cracked. I had it set at 265. Should I be curing at 250 instead? The doll has much softer feel than my orther kits.

I have a question related to baking. I have to strip and repaint a head that is rooted with human hair and sealed with Alene's Tacky glue. Can I safely cure the Genesis paint and not ruin the human hair or loosen the glue. It will take several bakings. I can't seem to find an answer to this question. Thank you

Hi Kim : this is Gail Stevenson. I have a quick question. I have a Nuwave oven. I'm a new reborner. I just finished putting 2nd coat of mint wash onto my practice head. I let both coats dry good. About 30 minutes each coat. I used Mona lisa thinner to use in my mint wash. It is flammable right? How long do I need to wait for that mintwssh to dry before curing in my Nuwave ? I appreciate any tips. Thanks- Gail Stevenson 😍

You do realize this page has nothing to do with living human infants, right? We're talking about vinyl dolls. You know - plastic dolls with fake hair and glass eyes and no living parts or organs.

Hi Kim, I have a kit I'm going to have to use air dry paints on. Can I use the same steps I'm familiar with for your tutorials with Genesis heat set paints as I go through layers and then seal?
