Before turning a doll into a lifelike reborn baby doll, we need to make sure that our canvass is a nice neutral color. Depending on the manufacturer, the vinyl you receive may be a little too orange or too pink for your purposes. Read more to learn how the color wheel will help you neutralize your vinyl. In the color wheel above, colors that are opposite one another are considered complements. For example, green is the opposite if red. We will use complementary colors to neutralize vinyl. Neutralize Orange VinylArianna by Reva Schick, like most of the German vinyl doll kits, is a little orange for my taste. It is much darker than the Flesh 08 I use to base coat, which gives me a chalky base coat when it is not neutralized. As we can see from the color wheel, Blue is the opposite of Orange. So to take the orange out of the kit, you can use any of these colors: Just pick one of the blues and add a little Flesh 08 to make it creamy. Ensure the color is diluted and transparent. We need to be able to see through it at all times. If at any point you feel that the doll is turning blue, remove the paint and add solvent. When you're done, the doll should look pale. Neutralize Pink VinylFreckles, by the Apple Valley company is too pink for the portrait doll I'm creating. The child she represents is very fair skinned, so I need to get some of that pink out of the vinyl. Pink is derived from Red. The opposite of Red is Green. We're going to use Phthalo Green and Flesh 08 to neutralize the vinyl. Next StepsAllow the paint to dry completely. Inspect your piece carefully for crusty spots and clean out the creases as needed with a Q-tip. Bake for 8 to 9 minutes at 250-degrees (60% power or setting 6 on the Nuwave oven). Allow the piece to cool. If the vinyl needs to be neutralized further, apply another translucent coat of your complementary color. As as many layers as needed, being sure to bake between each layer. Quick Q&ACan I use Vein Blue to neutralize orange vinyl?
How do I know I need to neutralize?
How many neutralizing layers do I need?

Hi Kim. Congratulations for your fantastic work! It's really awesome !!! I'm starting reborning and I have a serious doubt with yellow color to neutralize vinyl. I got Nico kit G.Ledger( Real Effect) which is quite pale and a little bit difficult for me to set into the RWC spectrum. I saw a tutorial reborning this same kit with yellow and white Genesis but not explaining why the artist was using this color. If I miss this first step I'll ruin all my further work. Please help! Thank you so much and happy new year!

Hi kim! Thank you so much for your reply. New Real effect kits are really pale so I'll try your way first and see how it turns out! I'll reborn my kit following your tutorials and taking my own real baby as a model :)) Congrats again for your work. I've seen so many tutorials! None like yours! Love them!!! 1/11/2016 08:21:45 am
Oooh! I didn't know Real Effect changed the color of their vinyl. Let me know how that turns out.

I am new to reborning and I have followed all of your tutorials for reborning my twins Chrisy and Kendal. Your tutorials are great! However, my dolls still look rather pale in comparison to the dolls that I have ordered from other artists. Is there anything I can do to make their complexion a bit darker or is it too late? I got my kits from BB and it said peach on the packages. But after all of the layers of mottling and complexion layers they still look pale, especially the hands. I have used only Genesis paints and I used the paints that they suggested for each kit. Could you please help me? I hope I have not ruined them! THank you in advance!

Once you neutralize a doll, and cure it, and start painting will you need to do the neutralizing process all over again if you made a mistake and need to fix it by removing the paint?

Do you use flesh 08 in the base coat for bi-racial dolls and African American dolls? Thanks

I love all of your tutorial and have just purchase my first baby. I have read hours and watched hours and still cannot get it right. I wanted a biracial baby she just looks red. I neutralized, used thinning medium, looked chalky with mons Lisa thinner. I feel really frustrated. I have started over 7 times and just want it right. All flesh colors look chalky and I did it thin, thickand with the bb medium. Help.7

This is my first time reborning, and I'm planning on using air dry paints to paint my kits. I was wondering, is it necessary to use heat set paints and mediums or could you use air dry paints and mediums?

Rosi, don’t use the milky looking thinner. Find a nice clear odorless thinner like Bob Ross or speedball. 😊

Hi Kim, I've been reborning for a few years now, but this is the first time I have come up with this problem. I should know better than to have this problem. I have done my veins too thick. Already baked them. How do I fix them?? I don't want to ruin the rest of my work. I am so mad at myself for having this problem!!!! Thanks, Tami.

My special needs daughter bought a reborn in November and loves him like a real baby...she takes him for walks, dresses and reads to him daily. He is slowly but consistently turning more blue (evenly all over his arms, face and legs every day. In your opinion, is this something that can be repaired? Thank you

I'm reborning one of my first reborns with air dry paints mixed with Folkart glass and tile medium and a matte acrylic finisher. I shaded the eyes in too dark with pink crease color, so I used nail polish remover to strip off the paint, but now I'm having a hard time blending the new flesh layers with the old and getting the paint to take effect on the eye. Any ideas?

How can I strip the GHS paint from the doll I started. I didn’t neutralize it first and the paint went chalky. I baked it already. So I want to remove it and start again. Thank you.

Hi. I got me an AA reborn doll custom made by someone on etsy and her finger tips Are starting to discolor.....turning black....how can I fix that? Because I'm not sure of it's because they may have come in contact with ink or heat. I've ridden her in the car with me a few times so I'm just not sure.

I mixed blue to neutralize a kit and being tired from my first day of working on dolls, I got the blue way to dark. I scrambled to remove as much as possible. Do I keep trying to get it out, or do I paint over it?
